The PC version of The Witcher 3 will have no restrictive DRM policies on neither the digital nor the retail version of the game.
Developers everywhere could learn a thing or two from CD Projekt Red. The folks behind The Witcher series of games have a novel approach to DRM policies for the upcoming third installment: getting rid of it completely.
For the uninitiated, DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, which refers to a set of technologies used by publishers to discourage illegal distribution of software. This includes the dreaded SecuROM and always online policies which gamers love to complain about. Much has been written about whether DRM actually helps in countering piracy at all. It is a common complaint that pirates get a hassle free experience by having all the restrictions removed on illegally obtained games. While legitimate owners of the software have to jump through the DRM hoops set up by publishers.
CD Projekt Red are no strangers to the DRM debate. The retail PC version of The Witcher 2 came with SecuROM restrictions that caused performance issues in the game. When the developers removed the feature in a later patch, gamers reported a 5 to 30 percent increase in performance along with quicker loading times. It seems that the lesson has been learned.
According to CD Projekt’s joint CEO Marcin Iwinsky, The Witcher 3 will be going commando as far as DRM is concerned. “I’d like to say it loud and clear,” said Iwinsky, “The PC version of The Witcher 3 will have absolutely no DRM from day 0. Zero. Zip. Nada. We’ve fiddled with DRM in the past (Oh boy! How young and naïve we were) and that’s enough.”
No word yet on when exactly the The Witcher 3 will be released, but gamers everywhere can be happy in the knowledge that they wont have to navigate through some draconian DRM to play the game when it does launch sometime in 2014.
