Listen up, Verizon users, and listen close, as we have both good and bad news for you today. Which one do you want first? Let’s start with the good and look at the half full part of the glass for once, shall we?
Big Red is the first American carrier to bring the latest and hottest version of Android, 4.3 Jelly Bean, to Samsung’s Galaxy S4, so far bumped up to the same OS only in its GT-I9505 and GT-I9500 “international” variations.
While not drastic or major in any way, the update does bring a fair share of goodies and little treats to the table, including several bug fixes, subtle performance enhancements and, most of all, full Galaxy Gear support.
I know, there are probably a handful of Gear smartwatches actually sold around the world since the gizmo’s launch. But maybe one of the reasons you hesitated to score one was that it was only compatible with the GNote 3 and GNote 10.1 2014.
Well, that’s no longer the case. Besides, plenty of other Galaxy stars are due for Android 4.3 upgrades, like the OG GS3 or Note 2 and the fresher and more modest S4 mini and Megas, so who knows, maybe the Gear will become a surprising box-office hit in the end.
And now for the bad. As if it wasn’t clear enough there’s bad blood between Verizon and HTC (for reasons no one gets), the Android 4.3 software bump for the HTC One has been pushed back. For “approx a month”, which could translate to anywhere between 30 and 90 days. Because that’s how Big Red rolls.
To make matters worse, Verizon hasn’t even had the decency to come out and confess about the delay, instead throwing the responsibility on the shoulders of HTC America’s President. That’s cheap even for you, Big Red.

Remember, we’re not talking about just any smartphone here, but one seen by many as the biggest Samsung Galaxy S4 rival last spring and yet that only landed on Verizon in late August. It’s as if the carrier wanted it to be a flop.
