iPad Air benchmark data coming in from Primate Labs’ Geekbench Browser reveals a substantial increase in performance, as much as 90 percent over the previous iPad.
The iPad Air benchmark score was compared to all iOS 7 compatible tablets by Primate Labs founder John Poole, the tablets included iPad 2, iPad mini and the third and fourth generation iPad. Based on this score alone, it is evident that Apple’s new 64-bit A7 chip does wonders in terms of performance, despite the fact that it is likely to be aided by just 1GB RAM like its predecessors.
The data shows that in this multi-core benchmark, iPad Air scores 2643 against fourth generation iPad’s 1408, marking an 87 percent increase and making Apple’s claim of offering double the performance through the A7 SoC, true.*Poole also finds that the 64-bit A7 processor is clocked at 1.4GHz, 100MHz faster than it is on the iPhone 5s. The reason for this could be the fact that the iPad’s larger chassis or larger battery may allow better thermal flexibility.
Poole doesn’t expect that the same A7 processor, which breathes under the Retina iPad mini’s hood as well, will be clocked at a higher rate like it is on the iPad Air. Given the iPad mini’s relatively small chassis, it is possible that the A7 chip might be at an equal clock rate with that of the iPhone 5s.
