The Indian handset manufacturer is widening its horizons after a strong financial year, and will start selling its devices in Russia and Romania later this year.
Micromax is already a well-known brand in India, and is the second largest smartphone vendor in the country after Samsung. The last year has been a good one for the Indian manufacturer, with a tenfold increase in sales and revenue. Micromax added a new device to its handset portfolio this week in the form of the Canvas Turbo, which comes with a full-HD screen, 2 GB RAM, 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 16 GB internal memory, 13 megapixel camera at the back and a 5 megapixel camera at the front and a 2,000 mAh battery. The device is available unlocked for $325.
At the Canvas Turbo’s launch, Micromax CEO Rahul Sharma stated the manufacturer’s intention to become a global handset vendor, and has announced that Micromax will start selling devices in the Russian and Romanian markets by the end of this year. Micromax lured in Hugh Jackman as its brand ambassador, and the move should go a long way in gaining the brand some recognition in international markets.
The Russian handset market is similar to that of India, with Android devices accounting for over 70% of the market share, followed by the Windows Phone platform. Micromax should see a lot of demand for handsets like the Canvas Turbo. The Indian manufacturer has also mentioned that it will collaborate with Yandex for software content on its devices.
Rahul Sharma also mentioned that Micromax will look into entering more European markets next year based on sales in Russia.
