Ex-Sony employee Kenny Linder has detailed a few of the PS4′s recently undisclosed share button and notification options, shedding light on handy functions and modes.
In a recent post on NeoGAF , Linder shared some interesting tidbits that highlight a few “handy” options that gamers can utilize to customize their PlayStation 4 OS to match their preferences. The options are centered around the DualShock 4′s share button as well as the console’s on-screen safe zone and notification settings.
What is a safe zone, though? It’s the adjustable image scaling that is featured in various games, and the safe zone is a pre-determined setting that makes it so players don’t have to manually adjust the frame on a game-by-game basis.
Linder’s focus on the share button is perhaps the most useful, as he reveals that the button itself can do three different things; record video, take screenshots and bring up a menu. The button can also be pre-set in a number of ways to determine how it functions when pressed and held.
For instance, users can toggle options to pre-define the button to take a screenshot when its pressed once, and to start recording when held down, and bringing up the menu when tapping it twice. Any variation of the three different schemes (that is pressing once, twice, and holding) can be combined with the three functions–recording, screenshotting and menu navigation.
The final bit of info focuses on notification settings, which includes a plethora of customizable options and toggles including how frequently you receive updates from PSN friends, game download notifications, and going into a silent mode where on-screen updates aren’t displayed. Linder also notes that users can turn off the OS’s music if they so choose.
One of the main questions that users have been asking Linder in the NeoGAF forums is if PS4 gamers can finally appear offline or not–but no confirmation has been delivered either way.
It would seem logical for Sony to include this beneficial little option, as the gaming community has wanted an “invisible” mode for quite some time, but we’ll have to wait until the console rolls out next month to be sure.
Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 4 console is slated to release on Nov. 15 in North America and Nov. 29 in Europe for a price point of $399. For more information be sure to check our recent coverage.
