The NVIDIA SHIELD*is receiving a major update that brings some important new features, including a jump to the latest version of Android.
Leading the feature list is GameStream, which is now out of beta and will allow users to stream games from a compatible PC and play them on a TV in 720p. It currently supports more than 50 games, including*Batman: Arkham Origins, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim, and more, and NVIDIA is giving away multiple free games and a discount on the SHIELD*to buyers of its GPUs to celebrate GameStream’s official release.
Next up is Console Mode – it will allow users to connect SHIELD to a TV through a miniHDMI cable and turn it into a mini-console with 1080p video output, with the option to pair up a compatible Bluetooth controller. Also included in the update is Gamepad Mapper, which will add support for basically every Android game that doesn’t have native support for the SHIELD controller by providing the ability to*map touchscreen controls for a particular game, while also offering*pre-mapped layouts for hundreds of games downloadable from the cloud.
Other features added by the update include expandable and actionable notifications, restricted multi-user profiles, the option to move full games (both the APK and the game’s data files) to the external storage, faster performance, and more.
