Sony's PS4 has sold more than 2.1 million units worldwide

Sony has revealed that over 2.1 million PlayStation 4′s have been shipped across the globe to date.

In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog , Sony has released an update that puts the PS4′s sizable launch into perspective. So far over 2.1 million consoles have been sold across the 32 counties which it launched, with North America heading up the sales and Europe/Australasia coming in a close second.

The PlayStation 4 garnered an impressive 1 million unit sales in the short span of 24 hours when it was launched in North America on Nov. 15. The console continued a similar trend upon its launch in Europe and Australasia with 700,000 combined sales–of which the UK topped 250,000–in a three-day period from Nov. 29 – Dec. 1.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO and President Andrew House had the following to say about the PS4′s stellar launch, citing that gamers are in for a long ride that’s just begun:
“It’s an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn’t have done it without you. I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence.

“The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible lineup of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.

The Sony exec continues to highlight the company’s commitment to bringing the best possible console gaming experience that they can muster, and thanks gamers for their steadfast support:
“While PS4′s capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that video games represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play.

“Thank you for your passion and your support – we couldn’t have done this without you.”

By the end of this year, Sony plans to sell three million PS4′s and another five million units by the end of 2014.

Based on these numbers and the popular demand in the UK and other parts of the world, the Japanese gaming giant should be able to hit those figures, despite some setbacks.

Sony’s official press release, where much of this information is gleaned, also gives a hint about the PlayStation 4′s cloud-powered Gaikai service. In lieu of backwards compatibility, Sony has constructed a unique network that allows gamers to stream PS3 games onto their PS4 consoles.

The press release had this to say about Gaikai:
“Looking ahead, the PS4 system will evolve through PlayStation’s cloud gaming services, available in the U.S. in 2014.

“Based on Gaikai Inc.’s cloud-based technology, the service will enable users to have access to a catalog of critically acclaimed*PlayStation® 3 (PS3 ™) games on PlayStation 4 and PS3, followed by PlayStation® Vita.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the service unfolds to compliment Sony’s next-gen arsenal, and how it’ll shape the PlayStation’s unique cross-platform experience across smartphones, tablets and possibly even PC’s.

Additionally there was a choice little tidbit that mentioned PS3 games will be stream-able across PS Vitas, but this may be limited to Remote Play (though it’d be very nice to see it done natively with the handheld).

While we have to wait to see the outcome, PS fans know this for sure: the PlayStation brand is evolving and it’ll only get better with time.

For more info be sure to take a gander at the press release, or if you happen to read Japanese head on over to the PlayStation Awards site for expanded PS4 content.
