Broken Xbox Ones ruin the holidays for some gamers

More than a few gamers have reported that the Xbox One consoles they received for Christmas are defective, citing a faulty disc drive as the culprit.

It’s Christmas Day, and teeming shreds of wrapping paper litter the floor. You’ve just torn away the coating to the next parcel, revealing a lime green box with the mark of Microsoft’s next-gen console upon it. To your excitement, you plug it up and follow the on-screen instructions to launch your brand new Xbox One.

Now you’re ready to slide in a copy of your favorite disc-based game into the slot-loader of the snazzy sable box, ready to venture forth into the new generation of console gaming.*

There’s just one problem: the console doesn’t want to read the disc, and there’s a horrible grinding noise that accompanies this error. Oh no…something is obviously wrong.

Popping the game disc out, you might clean it off with a microfiber cloth or even put in a Blu-ray…only to find the same error message pops up. “Sorry we can’t play this disc.” Hard resets or reboots into safe mode don’t alleviate the issue, and it looks like you’ve been dealt a bad card.

If you’ve faced this immensely irksome error, you’re not alone: many crestfallen gamers have been stricken by non-working Xbox Ones over the holidays, and no one is happy about it.

One Reddit user took this picture of the Xbox One error, detailing that his console also made the infamous grinding noise when trying to read a disc.

One Reddit user shared his experiences via the Xbox One sub-Reddit, interacting with community members on the situation. The user reports that resets didn’t work, and described the problem in more detail

Hard reset that bad boy. Hold down the power button for 15 seconds until the system reboots. If that doesn’t work then restore system to factory defaults. If that doesn’t work you’re going to have to setup a repair or head back down to the retailer you bought it in.

“Tried and none worked, place I bought it from (where I work) isn’t open until the 27th, xbox support website won’t work. Gutted.”

Luckily there was a silver lining for this particular Redditor; Xbox support is making up for the malfunctioning system by sending him another Xbox One, and also gave him a code for a few digital games to play while he waits:

“Thanks so much for this number, I called and they’re sending me another xbox next week, gave me a download code for dead rising 3 so I can play that and Fifa digitally until the new one arrives.”

Another Redditor didn’t know his Launch Day Xbox One was broken simply because he’s played nothing but digital games up until this point. Once the user popped in disc versions of Madden 25 and Dead Rising 3, he received a “wonderful Christmas surprise“:

“I got Madden 25 and Dead Rising 3 on disk, popped Madden in, and wa-la! Disc drive doesn’t work! I’m going to go straight to Microsoft for this one, seeing as I purchased my Xbox One over a month ago.”

Microsoft is apparently handling broken Xbox Ones in a similar way that Sony handled their own malfunctioning PlayStation 4′s. Gamers will receive a shipping label as well as a return box to send off their Xbox One, wherein they will receive a new console through the mail. In some cases, these return boxes and the replacement consoles will be through expedited shipping, reducing the amount of time customers have to wait.

Additionally Xbox Support told the following to the publication News For Shoppers concerning the disc-drive error:
The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program.

Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers.

Any customer who believes they are experiencing an issue with their Xbox One should reach out to us.

There are many avenues available for customers to get in touch with us including:

  • Talking to a live customer support person that can call you back if you don’t want to wait.

  • Xbox.com for support pages and forum.

  • On Twitter with @XboxSupport.

  • There are also Help and diagnostics on the console by saying ‘Xbox Help.’

If you’re one of the many users who have been disappointed by a broken console, be sure to contact the retailer you purchased it from.

Many retailers–whether in-store or online–will allow customers to return faulty Xbox Ones and exchange it for a brand new one. If you go through Microsoft chances are you may receive a refurbished unit, which may run fine, but it’s always best to go for new if you can.

In any case, every new wide-spread gaming console will have its glitches and hardware faults especially one month after launch, but this comes as little solace to those afflicted by the error. Malfunctioning Xbox Ones have no-doubt ruined more than a few Christmases across the globe, and it’ll be interesting to see a total figure of the disc-drive malfunctions to date.
