Smart clothespin monitors and checks for dry clothes

Tokyo System House Co. Ltd. presents their prototype idea, one that we hope would make laundry a bit easier and more convenient.

Hanging out clothes to dry may not be the hardest activity on Earth, but wouldn’t it be better if we could know exactly if they’re already dry and ready to be taken? Apparently that’s the latest test project that this Japanese company is undertaking.

The prototype is simply named as the “smart clothespin”, and as the name suggests, it is a clothespin that when used on any piece of cloth, allows users to monitor and examine its current state of dryness. Its moisture sensor delivers the analog data to a microcontroller, which digitizes it, and sends it to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth. The smartphone app then displays the data in an easy to understand visual form, promptly notifying the user if the attached cloth is ready to be taken.

Aside from showing the current dryness of the attached cloth, the app also shows the estimated time that it would take before it becomes completely dry, though the numbers are just simple estimates based on changing moisture level measurements (as time passes).

There may not be much for this rather simple smart device now, but the next phase of the test project would include the installation of atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature sensors. This could technically make the calculations made by the smart clothespin more accurate (and probably more functional). In addition, they also have plans to integrate the smart clothespin itself to a bigger central system of smart home devices, which we hope would include a machine that would automatically take out the dry clothes, fold them, and put them inside your drawers.
