A new and intriguing nugget of information on the oft-rumored but not yet confirmed 12.9-inch iPad Pro (aka Maxi) has surfaced in China, where anonymous “inside” sources suggest the display resolution may go all the way up to 4K.
The 4K marketing term is however fairly vague, so even if the scoop proves trustworthy, the exact pixel count of the largest ever iPad is still very much up in the air. In theory, we could be looking at a horizontal tally of anywhere between 3,840 and 4,900 pixels.
Then again, assuming Apple will not stray from the beaten path and go for a 4:3 aspect ratio this time around as well, there’s but one prime suspect: 4,096 x 3,072 pix res, also known as HXGA. The resulting ppi would be an outstanding 397 (vs. an already pretty impressive 264 on the 9.7-inch iPad Air), though I can’t stress enough how carefully you should take the claimed “scoop”.
Besides, the so-called insiders that provided the intel are themselves not certain Cupertino will ultimately choose to go 4K, as Foxconn, one of Apple’s oldest and most trusted manufacturing partners, is said to be testing a more down-to-earth variant too.
Namely, 2K resolution, a category where the iPad Air technically falls into, with 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. As is the case with 4K, 2K actually designates a number of different res combos, including 2,560 x 1,600 (WQXGA) and 2,560 x 2,048 (QSXGA). The latter is the closest to a 4:3 aspect ratio, so I guess we have our second prime suspect.
And the two may well team up in the end, as Apple could be working on a 2K iPad Pro for a spring 2014 launch and a higher-end, pricier 4K resolution-boasting model due out next fall. Between all that, increasing gossip of larger iPhones and a predictable handful of 9.7 and 7.9-inch iPad upgrades, 2014 is shaping up to be quite the busy year for Cupertino.
Let’s hope they’ll not be overwhelmed by so many tasks and pull each and every one of them splendidly.
