Telltale Games to work its episodic magic on 'Borderlands'

Telltale Games, the developer of the award winning The Walking Dead*series of episodic games, is working on a new series of games based on the*Borderlands universe.

What do you get when Telltale Games teams up with Gearbox Software? The answer is Tales from the Borderlands, a new episodic game series with a structure reminiscent to that of Telltales critically acclaimed The Walking Dead, and The Wolf Among Us. The series was announced at VGX 2013,* accompanied by a trailer for the game.

There isn’t too much information available on the project at this time. The series is being developed by Telltale Games, while Gearbox Software, the folks behind the Borderlands series are taking on the role of the publisher. Gamers everywhere are probably wondering how a multiplayer shooter/RPG hybrid like Borderlands will translate to the point and click story driven motif which Telltale is famous for.

“You get to shoot stuff, but in a different way,” said a Telltale developer. “It’s gonna play like a telltale game—you’re going to be engaging characters and developing relationships, but it’s very much in the borderlands world. It’s this great hybrid of everything that’s great about Borderlands and everything that’s great about Telltale.”

It’s amazing just how much Telltale is churning out nowadays. The company is already well into plans for the second season of the multi award winning Walking Dead series, and they are close to completing the second episode of The Wolf Among Us. The developer has come a long way from the wacky Sam and Max*series (remember those?) in terms of the story-telling in their games. However, it would be a longshot to expect the same tear-jerking tale from*The Walking Dead season in their latest project.*Borderlands is a franchise that has never taken itself too seriously, and it will be interesting to see Telltale games revisit their fun side.

The episodic game will start rolling out some time in 2014.
