Rumor: Low-cost Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite launching January 2014

Samsung may not be working solely on toned-down “Mini” and “Lite” versions of current smartphones for next year, but also a low-cost Galaxy Tab 3, according to intel gathered by the usually reliable folks over at Sam Mobile.

Wait, what? But isn’t the GTab 3 7.0 already budget-conscious enough, at 160 bucks or so? Well, Sammy has proven time and time again there are no barriers impossible to break in their eyes as far as pricing, marketing and performance are concerned, so it was only a matter of time until they decided to go after the $100 tablet niche.

A niche where profit margins are minuscule, but sales figures booming, thus leading to better brand exposure and so, in the long run, the advantages can definitely outweigh the losses.

The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, if we are to take Sam Mobile’s word for granted, will cost $135 (€100) in Europe, which should ultimately come down to a coveted $100 price tag in North America. Provided the Koreans are indeed eyeing a stateside release, since such dirt-cheap gizmos have found mainstream success mostly in so-called emerging markets of late.

There’s no word as of now on any of Tab 3 Lite’s specs, yet it’s crystal clear you shouldn’t expect much. For $100, you’re lucky if Samsung puts a dual-core SoC (any kind of dual-core SoC) on the thing, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the software side of things and 512 MB RAM. Plus, obviously, a 7-inch screen with 1,024 x 600 pixels resolution.

On the bright side, maybe not all Galaxy Tab 3 Lite versions will be so cringe worthy. Optional 3G support is apparently in the cards, so there’s no reason we shouldn’t dream of, say, a 10-inch Wi-Fi only flavor up for grabs at $250.

In any case, week two of 2014 (January 6 – January 12) is the ETA of the first GTab 3 Lite config, so all our questions shall be answered before long.
