Karbonn’s already on-the-rise reputation in the Indian mobile landscape is about to get a new boost, thanks to yet another uber-affordable quad-core Android smartphone.
Or is it a phablet? Either way, it’s one slab of silicon with impressive bang for buck, as it costs roughly $170 (Rs. 10,615) while offering more than generous screen real estate, decent oomph and a design that’s, well, not horrendous.
The Karbonn Titanium S5+, as the name suggests, is a (very) minor upgrade over the original Titanium S5, still available via an array of Indian online retailers for between $165 and $185 (Rs. 10,500 – 11,500).
Strictly from a visual standpoint, the S5+ is a smidgen more striking, with what appears to be a slightly thinner profile and possibly slimmer bezels too. But I’m afraid that comes at a price, as the battery is actually downgraded, from 2,000 to 1,800 mAh.
Good thing the 5-inch IPS panel is not such a heavy energy consumer, boasting sub-par 960 x 540 pixels resolution. The quad-core CPU is unlikely to go hard on the battery as well, though its make and model are unclear at the moment.
What we do know is the SoC is clocked at 1.3 GHz and the Titanium S5 uses a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon S4 Play unit, so we’re probably looking at a Snapdragon 200 this time around.
On the software side, Karbonn has taken things to the next level (from Android 4.1 to 4.2 Jelly Bean), whereas all the other features seem to be the same old, same old: 1 GB RAM, 8 MP/2 MP cameras, 4 GB built-in storage, microSD support, dual SIM, GPS, 3G.

The Titanium S5+ will have to fend off some mighty competitors before gaining a foothold in the budget mobile niche, as Xolo has very recently rolled out a $120 Q500 quad-core contender, while Micromax counters with the $115 dual-core Canvas Fun A74. Talk about impossible choices, eh?
