Mini versions of flagship smartphones are a serious fad in the mobile industry, and ASUS will be officially hopping on the bandwagon in less than a week.
The Taiwanese manufacturer has sent out press invites for the launch of the PadFone Mini, a device we knew was in the making, in Taipei next Wednesday. ASUS doesn’t mention any details other than confirming a 4.3-inch screen, but a listing on the*Global Certification Forum*(GSF) has stepped in to fill in the blanks, and unsurprisingly, there’s nothing impressive about the PadFone Mini when it comes to the hardware.
Unlike the Sony Xperia Z1s, which sports the same flagship specs as the Xperia Z1 in a compact body, ASUS has decided to follow in the footsteps of Samsung and HTC. The screen has an outdated qHD (540×960) resolution, the processor is a quad-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, and according to the GSF listing, the phone doesn’t even seem to support 4G LTE connectivity, though it does run Android 4.3, which is yet to be seen on any non-high-end handsets out there.
What might salvage the PadFone mini is that like its flagship brethren, the device will most likely be accompanied by a tablet dock, which will let users shift to a large-screen experience by using their PadFone Mini as the driver, while enjoying longer battery life thanks to the inbuilt battery in the dock. However, considering the device is powered by a mid-range processor, the tablet screen will most like have a 1280×800 resolution at the most, meaning this is one device that not many folks will be lining up to buy in retail stores.
