Which games will be bestsellers this Christmas season?

This holiday season is yet another much-anticipated one for gamers, game developer and platform makers alike, with new versions of major console gaming platforms and with exciting new games.

With the launch of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One being close to the festive season, there will be many games for both these next-generation and current-generation consoles making it onto Christmas wish lists this year. But which big games are racing to the number one spot this Christmas?

The latest installments of ever-popular franchises look to be leading the race this year, so let’s take a look at the games that are jostling for the number one selling game for Christmas 2013.

Grand Theft Auto V

Following an intense marketing campaign, GTA V broke onto the gaming scene earlier this year after a seemingly endless wait for fans.

GTA V has already received rave reviews from gamers following its October release. The latest installment offers a range of missions as well as the classic driving and shooting that fans of the series would expect.

While the overall narrative is a little on the thin side, the characters in the latest game have certainly been well developed – offering a convincing amount of emotion between the characters, particularly between the three crooks taking centerstage. In terms of sales, GTA V has surpassed its predecessor’s lifetime sales figures in just six weeks, selling 29 million copies across several platforms to date. The game also breached the $1 billion sales mark in three days.

FIFA 14

It’s that time of year again for the release of EA’s latest FIFA game. The new installment has remedied a number of issues present in other games and includes a new, more user-friendly, dashboard.

Career mode has seen a few adjustments, too, allowing gameplay to flow better. Overall, the gameplay is smooth with volleys looking and feeling natural, thanks to improved animations. Fans of the series will certainly notice most of the changes on the pitch, although multi-player mode has developed a few glitches along the way.

While uncertainties over which console system to buy have resulted in some sales slowdown, FIFA 14 actually leads the charts in some markets, particularly in the UK (a market where this niche is strong).

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts*has been so hotly-anticipated that it reached*$1 billion in sales on day one. Yes, the latest game in the successful war game franchise is set to reach the top spot this Christmas. Currently, Ghosts leads the global charts across platforms.

The success of the Call of Duty games is owed to their formula of well-paced gameplay that flows brilliantly. The premise of the new game is an entirely new spin where South American nations come into conflict with the US.*This unique premise isn’t the only change that fans will see in Ghosts as there are many tweaks across the board that have revitalized the multi-player gaming experience.

Gaming is usually subjective, as the gaming experience involves different platforms, capabilities and price points. The question now is this: which game or games have you picked up (or will pick up) this holiday season for yourself or for your loved ones?
