Vertu founder collaborating with MetaWatch in creating a ‘beautiful’ smartwatch

Frank Nuovo is working with MetaWatch in launching a smartwatch for luxury markets next year.

Frank Nuovo is well-known for his time at Nokia, where he created designs and materials that were revolutionary. In 2008, one out of every three handsets sold by Nokia was designed by Nouvo. He is also the founder of Vertu, which is known for manufacturing mobiles that feature exotic materials like diamonds and rubies. Naturally, these mobiles tend to be incredibly costly, like the Constellation, Vertu’s latest mobile, which costs $9,600.

Nuovo will be collaborating with the makers of the MetaWatch in creating a smartwatch that is beautiful. CEO of MetaWatch Bill Geiser said that for him, it was all about crafting beautiful products, and that the word “beautiful” is one that is not commonly heard when describing a smartwatch.

That has largely been true, as watches like the Galaxy Gear and Sony’s Smartwatch 2 have largely failed to convey a sense of fashion, instead focusing on the feature-set.

Nuovo wants to change that.

“Together we will launch a series of new creations for this emerging experience, marrying the passion and artisanal aspects of the traditional watch market with the benefits of state-of-the-art, wireless, multipart functionality. Our mass market to luxury and first-hand experiences will bring the highest level of understanding to what is arguably the next big opportunity in the world of mobile lifestyle products,” the company says in a statement.

The smartwatch designed by Nuovo will be launched by MetaWatch sometime next year, and there has been no word on how much it will cost.
