Unannounced series of Asus tablets pays FCC a visit, runs both Android and Windows

Asus has been known to dabble in the world of hybrids, both capable of switching between smartphone and tablet modes and change appearance from tab to laptop, but their next family of devices looks a tad more on the conventional side of things.

“Looks” being the key word there, as the trio of Asus slates recently spotted knocking on FCC’s doors will actually be quite unorthodox once you’ll get to know them. With nine subvarieties in total, the gadgets are to run either Android or Windows. Either separately or alternatively.

That’s right, three of the nine, carrying model numbers M82T, L82T and R82T, will be dual-booting devices with both Android and Windows on board. No idea what flavors of the two operating systems, but of course, we’re rooting for at least Android 4.3 (4.4 would be even better) and Win 8. Anything but Win RT.

Meanwhile, the M80T, L80T and R80T are apparently Windows-based and that’s the whole story, whereas the M81T, L81T and R81T have Android flying solo out the box. What’s with all the slightly different codenames? Hard to say, though we’re probably looking at models destined for various markets. Or maybe it has something to do with connectivity options, where one is Wi-Fi only and the others sport 3G and 4G LTE bands.

While we’re on the subject, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11n support are all FCC reveals in terms of actual features, which hints at the three (or nine) tabs being mid-range, budget-conscious products.

Hmm, the plot thickens, eh? Good thing CES 2014 is right around the corner to further detail the mystery multi-booting portable computing machines. Anyone curious or genuinely excited about the possible liftoff of *such gizmos? Why? Why not?
