Telltale Games takes on the Iron Throne with 'Game of Thrones' announcement

Telltale Games made an official announcement at Spike’s VGX 2013 that they’re working with HBO on their own adaptation of the fantasy epic Game of Thrones.

IGN announced a bit ago that Telltale Games is indeed working on putting their own spin on George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe. Now the studio has taken the opportunity to confirm they’re working on a Game of Thrones title at Spike’s VGX 2013 awards, and sat down to discuss a few things with hosts Geoff Keighly and Joel McHale.
It’s TRUE! We’re working with @HBO to create an all-new episodic game series based on GAME OF THRONES in 2014! #VGX pic.twitter.com/d5GkhS2MOw

Telltale still has a lot of work to do before Game of Thrones is ready, but knowing the studio, we’ll see a lot of intimate moments where decisions have quite a bit of weight. The studio feels–and HBO agrees–that the universe is rife with potential and fits right in with Telltale’s distinct storytelling style, with a whole smattering of unique characters each with their own drives and compelling story arcs.

The studio affirms that their Game of Thrones adaptation will have battle sequences, but they’ll be told “in a Telltale way,” meaning that gamers will be privy to large-scale battles but they won’t be hacking-and-slashing their way through hordes of armored foes.

Additionally the studio went on to say that the characters in the series fall in line with their signature dramatic flair as “they have a lot at stake, and every time they do something there’s always these huge ripple effects and collateral damage,” which is undoubtedly true–especially for major players of the game like the Queen of Dragons, Danaerys Targaryen.

With the folks at Telltale at the helm, we’ll* likely see an adaptation with even more great dramatic impact, filled to the brim with interpersonal moments that span the expansive mythos and universe. It’ll be interesting to see which of the main characters star in the game, and if Telltale ventures into some of the more unknown parts of the medieval world where mystery runs rampant.

Telltale’s Game of Thrones adaptation is scheduled to release sometime in 2014.
