Chinese manufacturer Meizu will begin selling its handsets directly in the U.S. next year, and will be at the CES next month to showcase its offerings.
While the manufacturer is relatively unknown to the mainstream audience outside of China, it is to change that by announcing that it is making its entry into the U.S. market.*In a statement on its site, Meizu mentions that it will bring its devices to the Consumer Electronics Show next month, and that it will be “the first step in a long-term strategy to pursue the U.S. market. Combining the elegance and functionality of today’s smartphones with consumer-friendly pricing, MEIZU believes there’s room in the U.S. market for another player.”
The U.S. market is flooded with devices that come with carrier deals, but there have been deviations to the trend lately. Google, for instance, offers the Nexus devices unlocked and contract-free, and also sells unlocked versions of handsets like the Galaxy S4, HTC One and Sony Xperia Ultra, calling them Google Play editions. These editions come with a stock Android ROM.
In a way, this is the ideal time for Meizu to enter the U.S. market. While there will always be a demand for the iPhone in the U.S., Android handsets from Samsung, LG and HTC have been doing very well in the country. Meizu will have a tough time convincing carriers to sell its handsets, or it could go the Sony route and sell handsets directly from its store. Whatever it decides to do, it will be interesting to see how the manufacturer fares against the established guard.

Meizu is an upcoming Chinese manufacturer who has steadily been gaining more market share in China thanks to its mobile offerings like the MX3. The MX3 features hardware that is similar to what is offered by Samsung with the Galaxy S4 for half of the cost. Meizu is also known for the UI skin it features on its handsets, which is called Flyme. Currently in version 3.0, Flyme is one of the best-looking manufacturer skins.
