Huawei Ascend Mate 2 detailed in China, beastly 6.1-inch Full HD screen in tow

The “true” octa-core Glory 4 (aka Honor 4) is not the only high-end handheld Huawei has in the pipeline, as the Ascend Mate 2 has been given Tenaa’s blessing, being therefore due for a China launch over the next few months.

But Tenaa’s North American counterpart, the agency they call FCC, is bound to get a surprise visit from the Mate 2 as well, since the phablet’s predecessor, unlike Glory family members, is available internationally.

Just don’t hold your breath for ever seeing the big guy on a US wireless network. Aside from Huawei’s radical decision of exiting the market following cyber-spying accusations, there’s one more detail blocking Mate 2’s rise to fame: its 6.1-inch display.

A spectacular 6.1-inch display, don’t get me wrong, with Full HD resolution, not the underwhelming 1,280 x 720 pixel count of the first-gen Mate. But a monstrous, too-large-for-humans panel nevertheless.

Let’s see, what else does China’s regulatory organization reveal? Oh, yeah, the Mate 2 will apparently make use of a yet to be released Huawei homebrewed quad-core SoC, nicknamed Kirin 910, based on ARM’s Cortex A9 architecture and coupled with quad-core Mali 450 graphics.

Then there’s pre-loaded Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (2012 called…), a 13 MP camera slapped on the device’s back and a 5 MP on the front. And microSD support, 4,050 mAh non-removable battery, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and 2 GB RAM.

Kind of a “meh” list of features considering? I agree, yet you know how aggressive Huawei can be about pricing, so fret not, the Ascend Mate 2 will sell. Starting when? Likely after February’s MWC 2014, as the Barcelona-set event shall mark the phablet’s debut under the limelight. Good luck, mate (pun intended), and keep it modest… cost-wise, that is.
