Here's how to find an Xbox One for the holidays

Xbox spokesperson Major Nelson has published a handy guide on how to secure an Xbox One for the holidays.

Ever since the Xbox One was introduced onto the market last month, Microsoft’s next-gen console has been met with “unprecedented” demand. Quite a few retailers across the globe have sold out of their stocks, and with the holidays right around the corner, there is added pressure for Microsoft to meet their quota.

To quell the tedium of the waiting game that many shoppers are faced with, Xbox’s own Larry Hryb aka “Major Nelson” has published a how-to guide that arms users with information that they can use to potentially nab an Xbox One.

Below are a few highlights from the guide itself. Odds are if you’re trying to get a hold of an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 then you’re well aware of these tactics:

  • Sign up for email newsletters and alerts from your favorite retailers and follow them on Twitter and Facebook for real-time updates.

  • Call your local retailers to find out which day of the week they receive shipments. You can check in each week to see if they have new stock.

  • Use retailers’ online stock checkers to find a store with Xbox One in stock near you, although we recommend calling to confirm.

  • Check with stores outside of densely populated areas – you may have more luck in smaller locations.*

You can also use tracking sites to help. Here are a couple I’ve found:

You can also monitor social media – fans have been helping fans find Xbox One and I will be doing the same. Follow me for regular updates of where to find it this holiday.

The last bit of advice is a good one; you’ll want to pay attention to Twitter and the official Xbox One Reddit as users are wont to help out their fellow gamers with nice tidbits and hints. Sometimes a Redditor will notice that their local GameStop has a fresh stock of consoles in, or even an online retailer–you never know what people will spot next, and normally they’re quite apt to make it public.

The key to finding a product that is in hot demand is opportunism and determination, so stay on the ball and keep on keeping. There are plenty of people out there who want a console, but you might get there first if you’re persistent and on-the-ball.

The console saw favorable launch-day sales in North America, which passed the 1 million mark in 24-hours, and it’ll be interesting to see the exact figures when Microsoft tallies the global sales.
