Bungie confirms the launch date for Destiny, with news of a public beta sometime in the summer.

Destiny is the latest game from Bungie Studios, the creators of the Halo franchise. This will be the first game from the studio after it decided to part ways with Microsoft back in 2007. Bungie has since signed a ten-year deal with Activision.*Destiny is a first-person shooter with a twist. It combines traditional first-person shooter features with that of an RPG.

And now it has a confirmed launch date. The game will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and the Xbox 360 on September 9th, 2014. Bungie has also announced that a public beta will begin sometime during the summer of 2014, and that players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 will get access it to first.

A post on Bungie’s official site from community manager David “Deej” Dague highlights the vision the studio had for Destiny. ”We first shared the design pillars of Destiny less than one year ago. We promised to redefine what players should expect from a Bungie game. We said we wanted to change the way people play games together. We set our bar high. For us, Destiny represents a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Bundie showcased a Destiny trailer video at E3 2013, which showcases elements from the game:

Destiny will be the first game in a multi-game series that will culminate many years from now, according to design director Joe Staten. ,

“We’ve put some big stakes in the ground way out there, so we know where we’re headed, but for this first release … if you’re just talking about the cinematic story campaign, we absolutely know where the first book ends,” he said during the game reveal.

The first book he is referring to is Destiny. “We know you’re going to take the first [book] off the shelf and play it through and [then] pull the next one off. We have a pretty good sense of where it’s going, and now we’re just laying down track in front of us.”

The game will define the future of Bungie, *and as such a name like Destiny feels apropos.
