5-inch Xolo Q1000 Opus with quad-core power priced at $160, shipping soon

Indian mobile tech fanatics on tight budgets, rejoice, as we’re inching closer to Xolo’s release of the 5-inch mid-range Q1000 Opus.

Up for pre-orders already via an array of online retailers, the 5-incher is to start shipping on December 16 from Infibeam and the “3rd week of December” (so around the same time) through Flipkart. The recommended retail price is $195 (Rs. 11,999), but both sellers charge $163 (Rs. 9,999) at the moment.

As the names suggest, the fresh Q1000 Opus and slightly older Q1000 and Q1000S share the same blood, yet you may find the Q1000 Opus has more in common with the Q500. Granted, that fellow is compact and petite, not mighty and spacious like Xolo’s latest push in the affordable phablet niche.

But on the whole, the two address the same target audience. And are equally as modest on paper, with the Q1000 Opus having the panel’s 854 x 480 pixels resolution as its main Achilles’ heel.

The silver lining is the 1.2 GHz quad-core Broadcom processor (not top-shelf material, but not low-end either), with 1 GB RAM doubling it for, I’m guessing, surprisingly solid gaming, browsing and multimedia performance given the price range.

Everything else pretty much falls under “to be expected” for a mid-end handheld, albeit I’m fairly certain some of you will still find stuff to complain about. Probably the 5 MP and 0.3 MP cameras. Or the 4 GB built-in storage. Maybe even the 2,000 mAh battery. Surely not the pre-loaded Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, dual SIM and microSD support.

And then there’s the design, which may not be exactly premium, but with slim vertical bezels and an 8.95 mm thin profile, is much more than you bargained for. Overall, Xolo is on the verge of hitting one out of the park again with excellent quality-pricing ratio. If only their gizmos would find their way outside India one of these days.
