Sony confirms PS4 controller will be compatible with Windows PC's

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida has recently confirmed that the PlayStation 4′s controller will support compatibility for Windows-based PC’s.

The news comes by way of a recent back-and-forth discussion on Twitter, wherein Yoshida revealed that the DualShock 4 controller’s “basic functions” will work with a PC. The Sony exec further details that the controller’s “analog sticks and buttons will work just fine”, and nods to the affirmative that the DualShock 4 will have default functionality with Windows PC’s.

The basic functions–that is movement schemes with the D-pad and dual analog sticks as well as face-button support–should work like a charm, however there are some questions as to how PC’s will recognize the DualShock 4 controller.

As Joystiq reports, most non-Microsoft controllers are coded with the XInput API*which makes a PC recognize it as an Xbox controller. Interestingly enough DualShock 3′s lacked XInput support, so it’s assumed that Sony will include the feature in the PS4′s input device.

Yoshida was further queried whether or not PC games would automatically detect the controller as a DualShock 4–rather than an Xbox controller–, however the results may yet to be determined as Yoshida’s answer told users to “wait for the post-launch field report”.

As the PlayStation 4 launches on November 15, we should have an answer to that specific scenario soon. For more information on Sony’s next-gen PS4 be sure to check our recent coverage, or head on over to Sony’s official website.
