Qualcomm executive dismisses Apple’s new A7 chip, claiming there are no technical enhancements nor benefits to the customer.
Qualcomm’s chief marketing officer is questioning the need for a 64-bit chip in the new iPhone 5s, calling it more of a “marketing gimmick” than technical enhancement.
Speaking to IDG Newswire, Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Qualcomm, questioned why Apple gave its new A7 SoC — which powers the iPhone 5s — 64 bits of memory address space but insufficient memory to make the enhanced addressability worthwhile.
“Predominantly you need [64-bits] for memory addressability beyond 4GB. That’s it. You don’t really need it for performance, and the kinds of applications that 64-bit get used in mostly are large, server-class applications,” said Chandrasekher. “I think they are doing a marketing gimmick.”
The iPhone 5s ships with 1GB of DRAM.
Apple claims that the iPhone 5s is twice the speed of its predecessor due to its 64-bit chip, but recent benchmarks say otherwise.
