No more distroted text with playable Captchas

Future Ad Labs is developing a new gamified Captcha system that completely rids itself of distorted text windows and lets you play instead.

Captchas are the annoying little apps that show up on password recovery screens, logins and in various other places throughout the web. They come in many shapes and sizes, but they usually all work the same : They display distorted alphanumerical characters or phrases and ask you to retype them into a little text field before proceeding. While some are relatively painless, some of them make verifying that you’re a human an incredibly annoying and difficult experience. UK’s Future Ad Labs wants to fix that.

There’s been quite a few nice advances in Captcha design lately, including some which only deal in numerical digits, some that are actually easy to read, and even one system that has you answering a simple question via a drop-down menu. However, Future Ad Labs thinks they can do one better by gamifying the experience. PlayCaptcha is their solution and frees the user from having to interact with distorted text while giving them a mini-game to play with that can also be used by advertisers.

Two of the first companies to sign up for advertising with PlayCaptcha are Heinz and Reckitt Benckiser. An early demo of PlayCaptcha features a Heinz salad dressing. To pass through the Captcha, you have to apply it to a sandwhich. Sounds almost pleasant, doesn’t it? Maybe there’s hope for the internet yet.
