Google announced that its latest acquisition is San Francisco-based gesture recognition technology startup Flutter. The move means that the technology used in Flutter’s app might soon make its way to Google Glass and Android.
Flutter is known for its gesture recognition software that uses a webcam to track user movements for controlling actions, like changing tracks on iTunes. Although the terms of the deal weren’t officially announced, it is estimated that the price was somewhere around $40 million.
“We are thrilled to announce that we will be continuing our research at Google. We share Google’s passion for 10x thinking, and we’re excited to add their rocket fuel to our journey,” Navneet Dalal, one of the co-founders of Flutter, wrote on the company’s blog after the deal was announced.
Dalal said that Flutter’s software will continue to be available on the Mac Store and Windows after the acquisition.
Google might integrate Flutter’s functionality into the Google Glass in the future, which will benefit from gesture recognition. It may also look to bring native gestures to Android, which will be similar to what Samsung offers through utilities like Air Gestures and Air View.
