Dell announced that it is getting back into the tablet segment by offering the Venue 7 and Venue 8 Android tablets.
At an event in New York City, Dell announced its latest batch of Android tablets. The Venue 7, as the name indicates, is a 7-inch tablet that features a 720p screen. It comes with a 1.6 GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2560 Clover Trail Plus processor. The Venue 8, on the other hand, comes with an 8-inch screen and a faster 2 GHz processor.
Also included is 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Both tablets have a 3MP camera at the back and a VGA offering at the front. The Venue 7 and Venue 8 have micro-SD card slots and will come in both Wi-Fi only and 4G LTE variants. These devices come with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Dell is selling the Venue 7 for $149 and the Venue 8 for $179, which is quite affordable.
However, this year saw great tablet launches that include the likes of the Nexus 7 2013, which features a full-HD screen, and the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch, which is much faster. Both these tablets are available for around $230, so it should be interesting to see if Dell will be able to break into this market. Both these offering also have a distinguishing factor that makes them alluring to buyers. Amazon has its own thriving ecosystem for the Kindle, and Google is offering stock Android on the Nexus 7. Dell is also throwing in an incentive in the form of its PocketCloud cloud sharing and virtualization service.
These are Dell’s first Android tablets since the 5-inch and 7-inch Streak tablets that were announced back in 2011. They did not gain any significant attraction in the consumer markets, which Dell is looking to change this time around, and going by the aggressive pricing, it may succeed in doing so.
