Samsung’s Galaxy Grand 2 is a mid-tier device that comes with slightly better hardware than its predecessor.
Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Grand 2 today, and the most notable change from the first Galaxy Grand is the fact that the Grand 2 features a 5.25-inch 720p screen.
Other hardware details have also been changed for the better, and the mobile comes with a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM, 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus along with a 1.9-megapixel front-facing shooter and dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) functionality.
There is also a micro-SD card slot (64 GB maximum), and the Grand 2 features Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. Samsung has been lazy when it comes to rolling out updates to its mobiles, and as such it is a good sign to see the Korean manufacturer launching the Grand 2 with a relatively recent version of Android. In terms of connectivity, you get 3G (HSPA+), Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, GPS/Glonass, Bluetooth 4.0, and micro-USB 2.0.
Samsung has decided to throw in features exclusive to the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 on the Grand 2, like Multi Window mode, Story Album, Samsung Hub, S Travel, S Translator, Sound & Shot, Samsung Link and Group Play.
The Grand 2 comes with dimensions of 146.8×75.3×8.9mm and weighs 163 grams. Samsung claims that the 2,600 mAh battery will last for over 17 hours of talk time. The device will be available in black, pink and white color variations in select countries later this year.
It is clear that Samsung is diversifying its mobiles into different lines. Already we have the Galaxy S series and the Galaxy Note series, which are the high-end offerings. Then there is the Galaxy Mega series, which sees devices with a screen size larger than 5.7-inches, and the Grand series, which now constitute the mid-tier offerings. There is no clear brand diversification in the budget segment, but Samsung does have a lot of mobiles in this category like the Galaxy Trend and the Galaxy Core.
