Apple has confirmed its acquisition of PrimeSense, the Israeli company behind the 3D sensor technology used in the original Microsoft’s Kinect.
Rumors about the acquisition started floating around just last week, and now the Cupertino-based giant has confirmed the acquisition to All Things D – the deal reportedly went through at about $360 million, an amount that’s just a tad higher than the $345 million claimed in a recent report by*Reuters.*
As usual, Apple didn’t go into the details of the acquisition other than confirming the fact.*“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” was the official statement. That leaves things open to interpretation when it comes to what Apple might use the sensor technology in, though rumors and speculation suggest the acquisition could be geared at motion and gesture-based commands in both Apple’s next-generation iPhone and the rumored iWatch.
