China Mobile iPhone and 4G launch confirmed by official news agency

China’s official news agency, Xinhua, has confirmed that China Mobile’s 4G and iPhone launch is just around the corner.

This entire year it has been consistently rumored that China Mobile is finally going to carry the new iPhones. A few months back the carrier’s chief said they were quite willing to sell the iPhones to there over 700 million subscribers. China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile carrier and it is yet to officially carry the iPhone, despite the fact that its rival carriers in the country have been doing so for a couple of years now.

It was rumored a few weeks back that China Mobile iPhone launch might take place on December 18 and according to the country’s news agency, the launch will be accompanied by the start of China’s 4G service.*Users will be allowed to apply for 4G services without having to change their numbers, however only users in Beijing, Guangzhou and Chongqing will initially have access to China Mobile’s 4G service. The citywide 4G network is still being built in Shanghai and services there will be launched later.

Despite the fact that the date has already been confirmed, China is yet to give the license required to start the 4G service. The service has been in the works for a long time and the fact that China Mobile opted for TD-LTE as opposed to the globally developed standard FDD-LTE only complicated things further.*China Unicom and China Telecom, who have a leg up on the Goliath as they offer much better 3G service, prefer the globally developed FDD-LTE standard, though according to Chinese media reports, the country will first issue TD licenses before it turns its attention towards FDD. This means that both carriers will have to wait for licenses as China Mobile finally switches on its commercial 4G service under the He brand, which means Harmonious in Chinese.
