Nokia Lumia 525 goes official as a Lumia 520 doppelganger with 1 GB RAM

After months of speculation, seemingly unintentional confirmations, vaguer and more thorough spills of information, Nokia’s Lumia 525 has moments ago become official as a minor but meaningful Lumia 520 upgrade.

Remember, the 520, while not a very impressive slab of silicon at a first glance, has earned a blockbuster reputation of late, being essentially the driving force behind Windows Phone’s slight progress. Naturally, the 525 has to feel a bit of pressure as a direct consequence, since it’s expected to carry the torch and consolidate Nokia’s competitive position in the low-end, low-cost mobile arena.

And by the looks of it, there’s no reason the Lumia 525 should fail. In a nutshell, this is the same exact phone as the 520, design, hardware and software included, with one key discrepancy. Where the 520 packed a modest 512 MB of RAM, the 525 comes with 1 gig in tow, thus making multitasking a breeze.

Or, you know, close enough, as the Lumia 525 is in no way a powerhouse. After all, a dual-core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 runs the performance show, so don’t expect it to knock your socks off.

As usual, Nokia focuses a big chunk of its advertising on the cute looks of its fresh handheld, measuring 9.9 mm in thickness and weighing in at 124 grams. The same swappable back covers are the pièce de résistance here, albeit for some reason the color palette has been tweaked and now includes orange instead of red and no cyan.

Just to make it clear, everything else about the 525 is a carbon copy of 520’s features, from the 5 MP rear-facing camera to the 1,430 mAh battery, pre-loaded Windows Phone 8, 8 GB of built-in storage and 4-inch 480 x 800 pixels resolution screen.

There’s no Guru accessory bundled in the box, still no front-facing snapper or LED flash for the rear cam. However, that means the pricing is unlikely to considerably budge, which is clearly great news. For now, the Lumia 525 is only confirmed as heading to Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific, but be sure to expect it all around the world by January or February of next year. En garde, Moto G!
