Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon 805

The next-generation Snapdragon 805 comes with 4K support and will be making its way onto devices starting next year.

The Snapdragon 805 is the second mobile SoC in the Snapdragon 800 line, and features Qualcomm’s next-gen CPU and GPU. The Krait 450 quad-core CPU is now clocked to 2.5 GHz against the 2.3 GHz max clock that was seen on the Krait 400 CPU on the Snapdragon 800. The memory bandwidth on the Krait 450 has also been increased to 25.6 GB/second.

A more significant change on the Snapdragon 805 is the Adreno 420 GPU, which Qualcomm claims is 40 percent faster than the Adreno 330 used in the Snapdragon 800. The Adreno 420 comes with support for 4K Ultra HD screens, and introduces support for hardware tessellation and geometry shaders. It manages to do all this at lower power consumption levels.

The SoC also includes Qualcomm’s latest LTE and wireless radios, which gives users the ability to download at over 150Mbps on cellular networks. The Wi-Fi ac chipset allows for 4K streaming.

Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies , said during the announcement *that, “Using a smartphone or tablet powered by Snapdragon 805 processor is like having an UltraHD home theater in your pocket, with 4K video, imaging and graphics, all built for mobile. We’re delivering the mobile industry’s first truly end-to-end Ultra HD solution, and coupled with our industry leading Gobi LTE modems and RF transceivers, streaming and watching content at 4K resolution will finally be possible.”

Qualcomm has mentioned that the first devices running the Snapdragon 805 will be available starting 2014.
