So far focused solely on premium Android slates with extravagant price tags and more recently, tabs based on Windows 8.1, Toshiba has finally come out with a Nexus 7 2013 “killer” wannabe of its own, dubbed simply the Excite 7.
Only the fresh little guy, already available stateside, has nothing on the second-gen Nexus 7 or similar contenders like Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX 7. Save for a fragile price edge, as it costs a measly $170, so 60 bucks less than the N7.
The thing is, in terms of specs and features, the Toshiba Excite 7 is more of a rival for, say, the $130 Asus Memo Pad HD 7. And even in a face-off with that, it loses quite a few key battles. Such as the display resolution duel, with an underwhelming 1,024 x 600 pixel count.
Then there’s modest 8 GB built-in storage to take into account, lackluster 3 MP/0.3 MP dual cameras and a battery rated at eight or nine hours of juice on a single charge, which is a tad more encouraging, but still not quite impressive.
As for the processor beneath the hood, it doesn’t come from a household name in the business, but instead Rockchip, yet it’s quad-core and clocked at 1.6 GHz, so it should supply superior raw speed compared with Memo Pad’s 1.2 GHz MediaTek.

Nothing to complain about in regards to Excite 7’s 1 gig RAM, pre-loaded Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or connectivity options (Wi-Fi, micro-USB 2.0, microSD, Bluetooth 4.0), whereas as far as design goes, the patterned back is definitely a plus, as are the 7-incher’s curves. A big minus is however bulkiness, as the tab weighs in at 349 grams, a whopping 60 grams more than the N7 2013 and close to 50 extra when pitted against the Memo Pad HD 7.
Looks like you may want to take advantage of the coming holiday shopping season and slash Excite 7′s price closer to its real value, Toshiba. Or else I’m afraid no one’s going to care. Right, dear readers?
