Latest Android distribution numbers reveal Jelly Bean now on more than 50% of devices

Google has released the latest*Android distribution numbers, and things are looking up, with Jelly Bean now running on more than 50 percent of devices.

Jelly Bean, which includes OS versions 4.1 to 4.3, is now on*52.1 percent of devices, while Android 4.0 ICS commands a 19.8 percent share. This means that almost three-quarters of Android devices now run on ICS and above, which is a boon for developers as they can now focus on the more advanced versions of the world’s most popular operating system.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still refusing to give up, running on 26.3 percent of devices, most of which are outdated and low-end devices that would have trouble running Android 4.0 and above. This should change once manufacturers hop on to Android 4.4 KitKat, which was only just unveiled by Google and is touted as being lightweight enough to run on entry-level devices with as low as 512MB RAM.

Bringing up the rear with minuscule presence are Froyo and Honeycomb, running on 1.7 and 0.1 percent of devices respectively, and are likely to fall off the radar in a couple of months. A good month for Android overall, and here’s hoping the next one is even better.
