Intel and Nvidia winners in last quarter according to Jon Peddie Research

Overall graphics chip shipments were up compared to last quarter, but down compared to the same quarter last year.

Industry consultancy Jon Peddie Research released its report today on GPU market activity in the third quarter of 2013.

According to JPR overall GPU shipments are up 1.6 percent quarter-over-quarter, but down 8.8 percent compared to the same quarter last year.

JPR says that the winners of the last quarter were Intel and Nvidia. Intel’s total shipments increased 3.5 percent from last quarter, pushing its market share up by 1.1 percent to 63 percent (note: integrated graphics), and Nvidia’s increased 2.3 percent pushing its market share up just slightly to 16.3 percent from 16.2 in the previous quarter.

AMD was the loser this quarter in GPU shipments with a 4.2 percent drop in quarter-over-quarter shipments and a 1.3 percent drop in market share. In desktop heterogeneous chip, a fancy word for APU, shipments AMD jumped 27.8 percent from last quarter. In notebooks it didn’t have the same luck, declining 21.3 percent.

While JPR’s research lists Intel as the leader in the GPU market this quarter, it’s only in that position because of its integrated graphics. Between the two markers of discrete graphics boards, AMD and Nvidia, AMD had 20.7 percent market share to Nvidia’s 16.3.

AMD’s attention is divided between discrete boards and APUs, especially next quarter with the release of Kaveri. It will be interesting to see if Nvidia can capitalize on this to try and win back a few percentages of market share from AMD.
