Google starts selling the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013 through the Play Store in India

This is the first time Google is selling a mobile device through the Play Store in India.

Indian buyers looking to get a high-end device without burning a hole in their wallet can now look to the Play Store, as Google has started offering the Nexus 5 in India.

The device will also be offered at other online retailers, but will cost more. On the Play Store, the 16 GB Nexus 5 costs $465 (Rs. 28,999), while the 32 GB is on offer for $530 (Rs. 32,999). On e-commerce stores, the 16 GB is listed for anywhere between $485 and $500.

The Nexus 5 is a competitive alternative to the likes of the LG G2, Sony Xperia Z1 and the Galaxy Note 3, which are all retailing for around $650 in the country. The only issue Google faces when it comes to selling the Nexus 5 in India is that of advertising, as manufacturers like Sony and Samsung market their wares aggressively in the country. Sony has recruited Bollywood celebrities to entice buyers, while Samsung is known to launch an advertising blitz whenever a new device is announced.

Another device that is available on the Indian Play Store is the Nexus 7 2013, which costs $338 (Rs. 20,999) for the Wi-Fi only 16 GB version. The 32 GB Wi-Fi only model is available for $385 (Rs. 23,999), with the LTE 32 GB mode on offer for $450 (Rs. 27,999).

With the iPhone 5S and 5C also launching in India within a month of their U.S. availability, it is clear that manufacturers are setting their sights on the Indian market.
