If AMD is hosting its next APU conference in China in May, it won't be HSA-focused

Key players in the HSA foundation have yet to be informed of a May APU conference.

A recent report from Digitimes and later followed by China’s My Drivers both claim that AMD will be hosting APU14 in Beijing in May, but a key player at AMD’s #APU13 conference says such an event is “unlikely”.

AMD’s annual developer summit, known as the AMD Fusion Developer Summit from its inaugural year in 2011 to 2013 when it was rebranded as the APU Developer Summit, has focused heavily on promoting heterogeneous software development over the last two years. The Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) Foundation — an alliance of industry titans dedicated to advancing heterogeneous computing — was first announced at AFDS 2012 in Bellevue, Washington and had a heavy presence at #APU13 last November in San Jose with big announcements from key figures and industry players.

One of those key figures that delivered a keynote at #APU13 was MediaTek’s Chien-Ping Lu, who serves as the chair of the group creating HSA’s Programmer’s Reference Manual. When asked about the possibility of AMD hosting an APU conference in May, Lu said it did not ring a bell and was “unlikely” because his group was focused on preparing PR efforts for June’s Computex on HSA’s 1.0 provisional spec. A PR rep for MediaTek also had not heard anything about this.

Confusingly, AMD’s Roy Taylor seemed to validate this report by tweeting out a link to DigiTimes’ article.

Perhaps AMD’s APU conference in China won’t be focused on heterogeneous computing, but rather just on APUs in the desktop.

We’ve reached out to AMD to comment on this, and will update the post when we get a response.
