OnePlus does not want consumers to settle, and with the One, is offering a device through which they don’t have to.
OnePlus managed to deliver in this regard, as the One comes with a 5.5-inch full-HD display manufactured by JDI, 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974ACv3) with a Krait 400 CPU, 3 GB LPDDR3 RAM, 16/64 GB NAND memory, 3100 mAh battery, 13 MP camera sensor with a 1/3.06-inch sensor size (the sensor is a Sony IMX214 imaging sensor) and Android 4.4.2 KitKat with a custom CyanogenMod 11S skin. In addition, the device has LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, microUSB 3.0
Delving further in, the One has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 scratch protection, ability to shoot 4K video at 30 fps and slow-motion 720p video at fps, stereo speakers tuned by JBL and three microphone setup that provides active noise cancellation. The One includes a Qualcomm Gobi 9X35 series LTE Category 4 modem, which allows for 150 mbit downloads. The modem is one of the best available today and features an exhaustive list of LTE bands that include 1/3/4/7/17/38/40, along with WCDMA bands 1/2/4/5/8.
The actual handset will be manufactured by Oppo, and from the first glance, the similarities between both handsets is evident. With a weight of 162 gms, the One is the lightest 5.5-inch smartphone in the world. OnePlus mentioned that the use of magnesium allowed the vendor to bring the weight of the device down. The thickness of the One is at 8.9 mm, with the edges of the device measuring 4.6 mm. The device itself looks sleek and well-constructed.
OnePlus One is initially offered in white (Silk White) and black (Sandstone Black) color variants, but OnePlus also announced that additional back covers will be available for further customization. The back cover of the One is removable once users remove the microSIM card slot, after which users would be able to install custom back covers. The combinations for the custom back covers include bamboo, wood, denim and Kevlar. The device also features a custom CyanogenMod skin called the 11S which includes custom icons and themes.
The pricing of the handset is another area that will delight users, as the One is available for $299 for the 16 GB version and $349 for the 64 GB variant. The device will be available in**Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK and the USA initially.*The One will be available for the same price as the Nexus 5, while offering more features in the form of a better camera and larger battery. It is in fact on par with devices like the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8), which cost twice as much. OnePlus is targeting the One as a flagship killer, which makes sense considering the hardware the device comes with. It should be interesting to see whether the One finds the same amount of attention as the Nexus series, and whether it will be able to take the fight to established vendors like Samsung and HTC.
