The card that’s already too powerful to have a defined use case gets overclocked by Sapphire.
Earlier this month AMD released the card without a cause, the dual-core Radeon R9 295X2. The extreme niche of 4K gaming can be handled reasonably well by either a Radeon R9 290x or GeForce GTX 780 Ti, and these cards can certainly handle any game at its highest settings at a mainstream resolution, but requirements from stakeholders be damned: AMD needs to ship graphics cards.
Sapphire is pushing things further with the factory-overclocked Sapphire Radeon R9 295X2 OC Limited Edition.Sapphire’s Radeon R9 295X2 OC Limited Edition ships with a factory-overclocked GPU at 1030MHz and 8GB of memory clocked at 5.2 GHz effective. In comparison, the original card has a clock speed of 1,018 MHz and the same amount of memory clocked at 5 GHz effective.
Sapphire’s overclocked card contains the same hybrid liquid and air cooler called ‘Project Hydra’ and the two 28nm Hawaii XT GPUs have been left unchanged.
A price for Sapphire’s overclocked card has not yet been released. Sapphire is also planning to release a “vanilla” version of the card for $1499, the same price as AMD’s reference model.
But the question remains: what do you really need a card like this for?
