Micromax "YU' smartphone with CyanogenMod arriving on 18th

Micromax is all set to launch the first device under its new ‘YU’ brand of smartphones on the 18th of this month. For those who aren’t aware, Micromax announced its new YU brand last month. YU branded devices will run Cyanogen software, like the OnePlus One and Oppo N1 CyanogenMod Edition smartphones. The company is now sending out invites for its launch event. The actual invite doesn’t offer any clues about the device though, so we will need to wait until 18th to find out more about Micromax’s first YU smartphone.

Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma seems to be quite excited about the upcoming launch and has told 91mobiles that the first YU phone is going to be a very impressive device. He said, “The phone is going to be a monster… really cool specs”. His statement obviously doesn’t contain any hints regarding the specs of the device, but since he used the word ‘monster’ it could mean that the device in question could be a high-end offering and may come with hardware specs as good or better than the company’s current flagship device. Rumors on Indian technology websites seem to suggest that the device will be powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, either the Snapdragon 410 or the Snapdragon 615. The device is also apparently going to offer 4G connectivity, which will make it the first Micromax smartphone to offer 4G LTE connectivity option.

With the new YU brand of devices, Micromax is looking at trying the Xiaomi and OnePlus approach in India by offering the devices solely through online retailers. It isn’t yet known which online retailer Micromax will partner with for YU devices, but the company has had good relations with Amazon Indian and Flipkart with previous devices. The Micromax Canvas A1 Android One device is sold exclusively through Amazon India while it has sold a few other devices exclusively through Flipkart as well.
