After dominating the US console sales charts for almost a year, the PlayStation 4 has now dropped to the second place as Microsoft finally clinched the top position from Sony for November. The PlayStation 4 had been the best-selling game console in the US market ever since it launched late last year.
Overall console sales for hardware, software and accessories dropped 11 percent in November 2014 compared to the same period last year. The decline in sales mainly comes from the expected slow-down in sales of the older generation of consoles (Xbox 360/PS3/Wii). The latest generation consoles saw a drop in sales as well compared to the same period last year, but unit sales of the eighth generation consoles (Xbox One & PS4) increased by 3 percent over last year.
Understandably, Microsoft is proud and elated with the achievement. Microsoft Xbox marketing corporate vice president, Mike Nichols told IGN “November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK.” No doubt though, one of the main reasons behind the success of the Xbox One this past month can be attributed to great Black Friday deals and promotions by Microsoft. Black Friday sale was a huge opportunity for Microsoft to narrow the gap down with the PlayStation 4 in the US market, and it definitely looks like they seized their opportunity perfectly.
Microsoft had enjoyed a clear sales lead over Sony’s PlayStation with previous generation consoles, it is only the Xbox One that had been trailing by PlayStation 4 in the US market ever since both consoles went on sale. Now that the Xbox One sales seem to be picking up, it will be interesting to see if the sales momentum is maintained going forward, or it will only be a short spell of success for Microsoft’s latest console.
What console did you get this Black Friday? Xbox One or the PlayStation 4?
