Lumia Denim update starts rolling out to Lumia smartphones

The rollout has commenced in China and is expected to spread to other regions in the coming weeks.

Microsoft has started rolling out the latest update for Nokia’s Lumia devices, dubbed Lumia Denim. The update is currently rolling out in China to the*Lumia 520, Lumia 525, Lumia 526, Lumia 625, Lumia 720, Lumia 720T and the Lumia 1320, and the most important feature seems to be the ability for users to active Cortana by saying “Hey Cortana.” This requires a device with a Snapdragon 8xx processor, and will bring Windows Phone users a feature that some Android handsets (Motorola’s*Moto X devices in particular) have had access to for some time.

Given Nokia’s huge focus on its phones camera, the Lumia Denim update also brings a couple of new camera improvements. The update speeds up the Lumia Camera app’s boot time, and also allows users to take a series of pictures with just a fraction of a second between successive shots. Some devices will also get the option to record 4K videos (likely devices with the Snapdragon 8xx CPUs), and*the update also improves low-light imaging with new software algorithms.

Lumia Denim is expected to make its way to more and more regions in the coming weeks, and it will likely be a month or so before the rollout is complete for all devices. Users can try forcing the update to show up right away by going into the*Settings »*Phone update »*Check for updates menu, though there’s no guarantee this will work for everyone.
