The Lenovo-owned company wants to get an early start in India’s upcoming 4G market.
Motorola single-handedly kicked off the budget smartphone race with the original Moto G, which offered near-mid-range specs at a price usually associated with low-end devices. Since then, the company has continued to perfect its ability to make great low-cost handsets with the second-generation Moto G and the Moto E, devices that have been extremely popular in countries like India where budget smartphones are in high demand.
In India, 4G markets are practically non-existent at the moment, with very few cities offering 4G networks and a severe lack of 4G-enabled handsets. However, this is set to change next year with a nation-wide rollout of 4G services by operator*Reliance Jio Infocomm, and Motorola’s president and chief operating officer Rick Osterloh*has said that the Lenovo-owned company intends to bring a bevy of affordable 4G-enabled handsets to get a head start in the 4G boom that’s expected to happen in India over the next few years.
Motorola is aiming to take a position among the top three smartphone brands, and expects India’s burgeoning mobile market to lend it a helping hand as it focuses on launching sub-$100 smartphones with high-speed connectivity.*“India is absolutely essential (for global turnaround). India and Brazil are countries that we think first when we think about our business because that’s the future. The market here is growing incredibly quickly,” said Osterloh.
