Sony rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat update to Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Xperia Tablet Z

The update brings the latest and greatest version of Android to*Sony’s early 2013 Xperia lineup.

Sony has announced the rollout of the KitKat update to four of its Xperia devices, including the Xperia Z, two of its cheaper spin-offs, and the Xperia Tablet Z.

Apart from the latest version of Android and all of its standard changes (faster performance, lower memory consumption, wireless printing support, white status bar icons, and more), the update also includes numerous improvements introduced by Sony. This includes an updated UI, with new animations and wallpapers that bring over a PlayStation 4 vibe, and a revamped Quick Settings menu in the status bar.

Sony has updated a few of its proprietary apps, such as the Messaging, Email, Walkman and Movies apps, with the Email app getting a new split-screen view for the Xperia Tablet Z. Furthermore, Sony has expanded the themes feature that has been present on its devices since the Gingerbread days, as*users will now be able to download themes from Google Play to customize the look and feel of the entire interface.

Sony has also confirmed that the update will roll out to the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 from July. As usual, the update will roll out in batches and take a while to reach all users, though a manual check in the Update Center app*or through Sony’s PC suite software can speed up the process in some cases.
