Samsung Galaxy S4 Active scores Android 4.4 KitKat internationally

Another international flavor of a high-end (-ish) Samsung device is boarding the KitKat bandwagon, as Android 4.4 updates for the GT-I9295, aka Galaxy S4 Active, have just started on the old continent.

The timing is ideal. We’re likely a mere couple of weeks away from the official Galaxy S5 Active introduction, and what better moment to remind users aging phones, such as the rugged fellow’s predecessor, are still important for Samsung’s software development team?

True, the S4 Active already got some love stateside last month, when AT&T bumped up its take on the handheld to Android 4.4.2, but a week or so into the upgrading process, Ma Bell stopped the rollout on account of mystery glitches.

Hopefully, outside of the US everything will work out smoothly for the water-protected, dust-resistant smartphone, which is in dire need of a refresh to regain lost popularity. Launched with on-board 4.2 Jelly Bean last fall, the 5 incher was never particularly hot in Europe, mostly due to its numerous similarities with the “basic” GS4.

According to multiple online reports, KitKat is being dished out over-the-air in Netherlands only at the moment, with a bunch of neighboring territories poised to follow suit soon enough. This week, next week, by the end of June at worst.

No words on any special tweaks the port may bring to the table, so we’ll presume the standard package of speed improvements and performance enhancements, along with a few bug fixes, is in store. Project Svelte is here to take care of smooth business, and a subtle user interface revamp is a guarantee. Also, a battery life boost and wireless printing support. Huzzah!
