Among the Mobile World Congress exhibitors that jumped the gun and announced new gadgets ahead of the trade fair’s official start, Lenovo chose the timid route for fresh smartphones, but no so shy approach for tablets.
Still not what you’d call a relevant handheld player on the Western hemisphere, Lenovo is patiently waiting for the Motorola deal to close and, in the meantime, continues to make great strides in the slate landscape.
Meet the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+, a very welcome upgrade for previous Android-based Yoga models which had everything they needed to succeed except for decent hardware. Well, this newborn 10-incher fixes that, with a quad-core 1.6 GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU and 2 GB RAM, retaining what makes the family special: the built-in kickstand for “multimode” experience.
Granted, the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ is not as productive and versatile as convertible laptops part of the same series, but it’s definitely more functional than most slates in its price range. Oh, and the cherry on top is state-of-the-art 1,920 x 1,200 pixels resolution. Actually, scratch that, the pièce de résistance is a gigantic 9,000 mAh battery, supposedly capable of up to 18 hours of continuous use.
Expected out in April, the flexible 10-inch Android (running on 4.3 Jelly Bean, but due for a 4.4 KitKat upgrade before long) will reportedly cost $350 stateside in a Wi-Fi-only flavor.
As for Lenovo’s latest smartphone efforts, they’re nothing to write home about, and they’ll probably get just a limited Asian run. Still, you can’t ignore them altogether, as they start at roughly $230 while packing solid hardware.
The $230 model is called S660 and “blends style and performance” with a sleek brushed metal exterior, 4.7-inch qHD panel, quad-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek processor, 1 GB RAM and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. For $40 more, you can score the fashionista-oriented all-glass 5-inch S850, with 720p resolution and top-notch 13 MP/5 MP dual cameras.

Finally, the $350 S860 oddly packs inferior 8 MP/1.5 MP snappers, but wins precious extra points in the design department, thanks to a premium metallic chassis, the display size (5.3 inches), RAM (2 GB), and especially battery juice (4,000 mAh). Can’t wait to see some of this cost-conscious magic transferred to Motorola-branded phones.
