Report: 'Wolfenstein: The New Order' will be 1080p at 60fps on Xbox One and PS4

Reports indicate that the upcoming Wolfenstein game will be in full 1080p HD at 60 fps across both Xbox One and PS4 versions, possibly avoiding another resolution gate scenario.

With Wolfenstein: The New Order , Machine Games has crafted a FPS that revels in hellish mayhem: the chaos that ensues is something that falls right in line with the age-old series and punctuates a new generation quite well. It’s an experience that seriously tests your mettle as explosive murder lays around every corner, and it honestly looks to be one of the most unique shooters of this year.

But how will Wolfenstein perform on both consoles? Will we see the gaming world divided once again in another dreaded “resolution gate” argument of frame-rates and resolution?

Traditionally there have been discrepancies of multi-platform games (look at the Call of Duty: Ghosts debacle, for instance) between the Xbox One and PS4 versions, but it seems that the upcoming Nazi shooter may be the same for both platforms.

According to Bethesda’s PR rep Angela Ramsey, the Xbox One version of Wolfenstein: The New Order will run at a smooth 60 frames-per-second at full 1080p HD, making the slaughterfest action as pristine and clear as possible.

As for the PlayStation 4 version, other reports indicate that this flavor will match up with the purported Xbox One resolution/frame-rate performances–the standard 60fps/1080p combo that shooter fans know and love.

As we all know, frame rates drop during gameplay and aren’t always consistent 100% of the time. Furthermore we must remember this is subject to change as the developers continue fabricating the game, so these figures may be a general guideline rather than a set-in-stone confirmation.

Machine Games has also dropped the multiplayer aspect for Wolfenstein: The New Order, instead investing fully into a distinct and dynamic singleplayer campaign. Since multi was dropped, we now get a campaign that runs anywhere from 15-20 hours, which is splendid news for gamers who play shooters for their singleplayer campaigns (while they are few and far between, they are out there).

Dropping multiplayer may sound like a bad idea, but it all goes into the total unique experience that Machine Games is offering: a parallel timeline that’s fraught with tyranny, fascism, and good old-fashioned shoot-em-up chaos. After playing the game last year during E3, I can honestly say it was one of the more engaging shooters in that it pulls you into this deranged universe and makes you into a gritty, nail-chewing hero who literally has to blast his way through everything.

It’s a different kind of game, but it has everything a shooter should have–and then some. The story arc is pretty interesting as well, and I for one can foresee an interesting number of twists based on war-time history and of course some insane mecha-Hitler to be destroyed with dual rocket launchers.

Be sure to remember that pre-orders for Wolfenstein guarantee you access to the Doom 4 beta, which is a great little addition.

Wolfenstein: The New Order will be available on May 20, 2014 on current/next-gen consoles and PC. For more information be sure to check out the game’s official website.
