Did you know that you can name a Mars crater after yourself or a loved one?
Uwingu.com will name a crater after you or someone you think should have a hole on Mars.* While it won’t be official (not backed by the likes of NASA), the money raised by the crater-naming campaign will be put towards ‘space research and education.’
A small crater will cost around $5, and a gigantic hole can cost as much as $500.
As we already mentioned, naming a Mars crater through Uwingu (Swahili for ‘sky’) won’t mean that NASA or other space agencies will accept it as the official name.* It’s a fun way to have something named after you or someone you want to troll. *The naming scheme is nothing scientific either, so you are free to give the holes some lovey-dovey names or go to town and give them names like ‘Sarah’s large hole in the ground.’
There are some 500,000 ‘unnamed’ craters on Mars, and this is probably the closest any of us will ever get to being on the red planet.* Uwingu has even erected a grid system that will allow you assign ‘Districts’ and ‘Provinces’ to it.
