Sony sells 322,083 PlayStation 4 consoles during Japanese launch weekend

Sony is off to a great start with the PlayStation 4 in its home market.

Sony launched the PlayStation 4 console in the Japanese market last weekend, and according to Famitsu, the manufacturer has already sold 322,083 consoles in the first two days of availability.

In contrast, Sony managed to sell only 88,443 PlayStation 3 units over the course of the launch weekend back in November 2006. A factor for the low sales figures was the lack of availability of the PS3 console in the beginning. However, this time around it looks like Sony stocked a large number of PS4 consoles to meet the demands of the Japanese audience.

The standard version of the PS4 costs $409 (41,900 yen), while the console along with the PlayStation Eye Camera costs $458 (46,900 yen). Sony is giving away a downloadable version of its action title Knack with both editions of the console. While the console is seeing a lot of consumer interest, most consumers were disgruntled at the fact that North American users had a headstart of three months. Several customers queuing in line to get a PS4 voiced their frustration at the fact that console was launching in its home country last. “Isn’t Sony a Japanese company anymore? I think a Japanese company should launch new things in Japan first,” one is quoted as saying.

Sony’s answer was that titles for the Japanese audience, like Yakuza and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes weren’t finished by the time the console was set to launch. MGS V is set to launch next month, with other long-awaited titles like Dynasty Warriors 8 making its way to the PS4 on March 25. Interest in games like Battlefield 4 and Killzone: Shadow Fall is also high. Japanese customers may have been miffed about getting the console last, but the sales figures indicate that the anger was short-lived.
